AI on the Shop Floor: Why ERP Is the Foundation for Real Impact

31 March, 2026

We recently attended the Manufacturing & Automation eXchange (MAX), where conversations centered around one of the most talked-about topics in manufacturing today: the role of AI in operations.

One of the highlights from the event was a workshop focused on AI on the factory floor, where our own Ethan Hicks joined a panel of industry experts to share perspectives on how AI and ERP work together to drive meaningful impact across manufacturing organizations.

As we sat in on sessions and connected with manufacturers, a few key themes stood out.

Start with Strong, Reliable Data

AI can only work with what it’s given. Without clean, structured information, defined processes, and proper training, it won’t fix underlying issues. It will amplify them.

This is where ERP plays a critical role. A modern ERP system, like Sage X3, serves as the centralized foundation for your business, bringing together information across operations into a single source of truth. When AI tools pull from that foundation, the insights they generate become far more accurate, actionable, and valuable.

AI Works Best Alongside People, Not in Place of Them

A consistent message throughout the session: AI is not here to replace your workforce.

Instead, it’s designed to enhance it.

From production managers to executives, human judgment, experience, and creativity remain essential. AI helps surface patterns, highlight inefficiencies, and provide recommendations, but it’s people who interpret those insights and make the final call.

The strongest outcomes come when AI is paired with informed, engaged teams.

The Impact Goes Beyond the Shop Floor

While many conversations start with production, the impact of AI extends across the entire organization.

From improving scheduling and reducing downtime on the shop floor to enhancing financial forecasting and executive decision-making, AI has the potential to influence every layer of the business.

When connected through ERP, this impact becomes even more powerful, enabling real-time visibility, better collaboration, and faster, more confident decisions.

Data Responsibility Matters More Than Ever

As AI adoption accelerates, so does the need for accountability.

Manufacturers must think beyond just what AI can do, and consider how it should be used. Transparency, traceability, and governance are becoming essential components of any AI strategy.

ERP systems help support this by providing structured workflows, audit trails, and data integrity—ensuring that as organizations move faster, they’re still operating with control and confidence.

Adoption Is What Drives Success

The technology is here, but success isn’t guaranteed.

The biggest differentiator we heard across sessions wasn’t the tools themselves, but how organizations adopt them. Clear communication, proper training, and cross-functional buy-in are what turn AI from a concept into something teams trust and use daily.

Without that foundation, even the most advanced tools fall short.

Bringing It Back to What Matters

Events like this are a valuable reminder that while technology continues to evolve, the fundamentals still matter: strong data, connected systems, and empowered teams.

We’re excited to bring these insights back to our customers and continue helping manufacturers build the right foundation for what’s next.

If you’re exploring how AI fits into your operations, it starts with understanding your current systems, processes, and data. Let’s build from there.
