Sage hosts study hall to gear up for Year End 2017

Remember back in high school when the worst thing (hopefully) you had to deal with was studying for end-of-year exams? When it came down to crunch time, you were happy to have a couple of study hall periods in order to get some extra cramming done.

For many accountants and professionals, year end is still a pretty big deal. There’s reconciling the general ledger, closing out the fiscal year, and prepping for new legislation for the coming year.

In the past, there hasn’t been an opportunity for professionals to prepare for year end. That all changed last year, when Sage introduced Sage Study Hall to help its customers get ready to cram for their final work for the year.

The idea for Sage Study Halls came from Amy Dotson, Sage’s Director of Digital Services (read: Sage City Governor) for 2016. The study hall concept is a way for Sage to offer an informal way for customers to learn more about a timely topic through a live discussion lead by a Sage expert.

“Year end in particular is a very busy time of year,” said everyone’s favorite Sage City Sheriff, Jen Fennell. “Our hope is that offering these ‘prep sessions’ will help customers get the information they need to have a successful (and hopefully less stressful) year end!”

The study halls actually came out at the end of last year, but Fennell said they debuted late in the year so many people missed them.

“As you can imagine, the sessions were very well received by those who attended and the Sage North America Services Team is excited to host them again this year,” Fennell said.

Study Hall open for three Sage products

Between Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Wednesday, Dec. 20, Sage is offering study halls for three of its main products: Sage 50 U.S. Edition (formerly Sage Peachtree), Sage 100 Contractor and Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate.

The sessions will be hosted via webinar, and are free for Sage customers to attend. The registration links for the study halls are on Sage City Online. You don’t have to register with Sage City in order to register for the study halls (but we highly recommend joining Sage City — it’s free too).

Sage 50 U.S. Edition Study Hall will feature:

  • Resolving Pervasive Issues, Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. Eastern
  • Getting Ready for Year End, Monday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Eastern

Sage 100 Contractor Study Hall will feature:

  • Migrating to version 20 in Sage 100 Contractor, Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Wednesday, Dec. 6 at noon Eastern
  • Updating Your Sage 100 Contractor Software for Year End, Wednesday, Dec. 20 at noon Eastern

    • Reconciling AP to GL and closing the year in AP, Monday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. Eastern

    • Closing the Fiscal Year, Friday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. Eastern
    • Troubleshooting financial balances and printing prior year reports, Monday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. Eastern
    • Updating your Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate software for year end, Thursday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. Eastern
  • Payroll
    • Closing the year in Payroll and installing the tax update, Friday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. Eastern
    • Entering third-party sick pay, Thursday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. Eastern
    • Setting up W2 formats and adding local taxes, Friday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. Eastern
    • Archiving employees in Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, Thursday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. Eastern
    • Setting up and entering bonus pay, Friday, Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. Eastern
  • ACA
    • ACA and changing codes and amounts for employees, Monday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. Eastern

According to Fennell, the Sage Study Halls are only available for these three titles for the time being. She said they’re considering adding a Sage Fixed Assets Study Hall for January (“so technically next year — depending on how you look at it”) , but it hasn’t been finalized yet.

More year end help outside of study hall in Sage University

While study halls may not be available for everyone, other Sage customers can still go to school for year end classes.

The Sage City Year End Center is available for all major Sage software titles.

“Many of our Sage University curriculum developers and trainers are also putting together year-end training courses specifically geared to help customers close the books — tasks which are often performed only once a year,” Fennell said.

Also, Sage City features a newly designed Year End Center, where the home pages are easier to navigate. From Sage 50 to Sage 500, and Sage 100 Contractor to Sage Fixed Assets, Sage offers separate Year End Center home sites for its most popular titles.

I’m glad to see Sage outdoing itself for year end. Across the board, it’s probably one of the most asked about procedures for Sage customers, whether they’re freshmen or seniors. I also like the concept behind the study halls. It doesn’t surprise me they were well received. They sound a lot like the informal Sage City Roundtables held at Sage Summit each year, which are extremely popular.

And, if you’re disappointed there isn’t a study hall for what you’re majoring in what Sage product you have, let them know on Sage City. I can’t stress it enough: Sage won’t know there’s interest in adding more study halls unless customers take the time to tell them. They may not be able to add more for 2017, but there’s still next year (and the next year … and the next year …)
