Don’t adjust your monitor: You’re not seeing things. For the first time in three years, I changed The Practical Blog’s theme.
I wish I didn’t have to change it, but it took me a while to figure out that our blog’s slow loading times happened because our former WordPress theme hadn’t been updated in two years. (You’d think I would have put 2 and 2 together sooner, but alas …) I can neither confirm nor deny that I chose this new theme because it may share a title with one of my favorite albums of all time.
But what better time to switch blog themes because we are nearing completion of rebuilding the Practical Software Solutions website. Yes, our handy-dandy site is finally getting a responsive makeover, allowing for better mobile usage.
We’re also modernizing the layouts, bringing a more modular format. This means no more of the dreaded “Wall of Text” or endless lists of links that take up too much real estate. In today’s mobile world, web users know they can find a page’s index by hitting menu icons. This allows for a much more clean and concise page and a better experience for the user, whether you’re visiting the site on a smartphone, a tablet, or on your computer.
We’re also changing the images on our site to show off our wide range of customers. Why use a stock photo of a construction site when we can show off Davidson Excavating‘s work on an airplane hangar — and end up with a really cool photo, too!
Coming soon: A new customer portal for our website
Speaking of our customers, we’re expanding our customer portal. Right now, our customers can log into a password-protected portal to access their SharePoint site. (We use SharePoint for project management during large projects with our customers, such as implementations and customization,) Matt Holland, our director of customized solutions, came up with the idea to add an entire reference area for our customers, including links to Sage training and their knowledge base, information for new customers, info for Sage Summit, and anything else we can think of to help customers find quick-hit information. (This will be in Phase 2 of our project after we launch the site.)
We’ve just finished the first draft of the new website and are now working on tying everything together. Our plan is to have it live by the end of this month, with more functionality added after launch.
We’re really excited about the new website, and we hope you’ll enjoy it!
P.S. I obviously can’t show you the new website now since it’s still a work in progress, but I’ll give you a little tease:
